Intellectual property, patents and innovation in aeronautics

Abstract:

This chapter begins with a general discussion of intellectual property, patents and creativity/innovation. A historic case study of automated material placement (AMP) equipment is presented. As the large commercial aircraft (LCA) industry attempts to shift from mostly metallic to composite airplanes, the ability of airframers (prime contractors or system integrators) and equipment vendors to innovate and transactualize technological advances (i.e. improved machine functionality, speed and reliability) will no doubt dictate the long-term health of the industry.
