A Primer for Innovators

To illustrate the nuts and bolts of a tournament, consider the reality television show American Idol. One of the most popular shows on TV, it has attracted an audience of over 30 million people and has been replicated around the globe. Every season, it starts with a tour of a handful of American cities, where tens of thousands of wannabe stars audition in front of juries.
