The term metaverse was originally coined by the best-selling author of speculative cyber fiction Neil Stephenson in 1992 in his dystopian novel Snow Crash. It is a futurist’s satire on two parallel worlds “real”—the physical—and “metaverse”—the online virtual reality (VR) world. The “real” or physical world is dominated by Orwellian, monopolistic, malevolent mega corporations headed by superefficient control freaks, and the “metaverse” or “VR” universe is even worse—besieged with crime, corruption, collusion, intrigue, insecurity and danger.
