Even as the technology is still in its infancy, XML has shown great promise for a variety of applications. The W3C has gone to great lengths to extend XML into every arena possible and has had much success. Data storage and communication are only the beginning as XML moves into other areas replacing technologies, such as PDF with PGML (Portable Graphics Markup Language), XHTML—the XML variant of the HyperText Markup Language that is making its way into modern day web browsers.
