Interactive Viewing in 3D
Whereas multiple viewports provide useful static views of a 3D model, the 3DORBIT command allows you to view 3D models interactively. When the 3DORBIT command is active, you manipulate the view with the screen pointing device (the mouse), and you can view the model from any point in 3D space.
The 3D orbit view overlays an “arcball” on the current view of the model. The arcball consists of a circle divided into four quadrants by smaller circles, as shown in Figure 27.18. The center of the arcball represents the target, which remains stationary. As you manipulate the view, the camera, or viewpoint, moves around the target depending upon where you place the pointing device. You click and drag the cursor to rotate the view. ...
