Foreword
As I thought about writing the foreword for this volume, the word "master" came to mind before ever opening the draft. As a transitive verb, "to master" means to gain thorough knowledge of something or to become skilled in its use. As a noun, "master" is a rich word with many subtle interpretations. In the context of this book, two interpretations come to mind: a master as someone who possesses consummate skill in some endeavor and a master as someone qualified to teach apprentices. I was amazed upon opening an early draft to find, as if by some synchronicity, the first chapter opening with a discussion of "mastering" the fundamentals of SQL programming.
