Installing and Configuring Modems
Plug and Play takes a lot of the pain out of modem installation. Ideally, you should be able to install a new modem by putting it in a PCI slot, booting the machine, and watching for a balloon in the Notification area of the status bar as PnP does its thing. If you have a laptop, you can install a PC Card modem while the computer is running and the PnP Manager will find it and install the drivers. Installing USB modems is just that easy, as well.
Installing legacy modems is a bit more problematical. The PnP Manager uses a driver called Serenum.sys to enumerate serial devices. It should find any legacy and plug-and-play modems connected to the RS-232 ports or attached to the PCI bus. In the Windows Driver Model ...
