4.7. SAN Building Blocks

Sections 4.4 and 4.6 provided an overview of Fibre Channel topologies and the Fibre Channel protocol. Continuing with the top-down approach, it is time to consider the various different devices and elements that are used to construct a Fibre Channel SAN. These elements, referred to as the building blocks of a Fibre Channel SAN, are

  • Host bus adapters

  • Fibre Channel cables

  • Connectors

  • Interconnect devices, which include hubs, switches, and fabric switches
