Get Results, Not Salutes
It used to be that no end of nonsense got in the way of results. When I joined the Navy as a Midshipman at Annapolis in 1978, we used to say there was the right way, the wrong way, and the Navy way, and we did things the Navy way, saluting smartly at every turn.
In today’s Navy, I’m glad to say, there’s far more emphasis on results than on salutes, and good ideas are wherever you find them. If your organization is still running the old Navy way, you can improve both your bottom line and your life on the job by risking a bit more use of flexibility.
