It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Software Tools
With hardware in place, turn your attention to understanding the software tools available for surround sound mixing. While each software product has its own unique features, they all share common techniques and tools specific to surround sound work.

Critical to surround mixing is support for multiple audio tracks. Having access to a number of tracks gives greater control over the finished mix. Even if a field recording was made in 5.1, there is still a need for at least six tracks with the surround authoring program.
