Bass Management, Center Channel, and Downmix

There are some crucial surround caveats that you must both understand and handle. This chapter addresses the details concerning the LFE and center channels along with the upshot on downmixing.

LFE and Subwoofer

As has been mentioned, it’s important to note the difference between the LFE channel and the subwoofer. The sub is an actual physical component—a speaker designed to reproduce low frequencies. The LFE is a surround effects channel for carrying special low-frequency effects. The confusion comes from the fact that the LFE effects are actually reproduced by a subwoofer.
