I always want to stress that you can choose between a number of different instructional approaches and models to guide how you go about designing your instruction. In Chapters 2 through 6, I set the stage for understanding the different types of instructional designs that you can employ, depending on your specific configuration of goals, learners, and instructional needs. Chapter 2 lays out a framework for understanding how different learning and instructional foundations can lead to different types of instructional designs, while Chapter 6 explores instructional design frameworks that I refer to as “direct instruction” — instruction that focuses on activities that support acquiring and processing content information according to specific learning outcomes. I provide tips for designers to organize their instruction in alignment with such goals and objectives.
