43.4.1. Reliability Budgets
Few electronic systems are designed for which no reliability target exists. This may vary from “no worse than the opposition" for a mass-produced domestic article to a closely specified minimum MTBF for an avionic or military system, with perhaps a financial bonus for exceeding the minimum.
In the past some designs have been largely completed before an estimate of reliability was started. If this diverges significantly from the target, a major redesign is required involving much extra time and cost.
