Chapter 7

IOS Firewall and Security Features

Cisco’s venerable IOS, which has been around since the 1980s, is used in the majority of Cisco networking devices today. Over the years, IOS has evolved to include forks and multiple versions, such as IOS XE and IOS XR. IOS can now be run in a virtualized environment, which makes it very useful for CCIE preparation. This environment, called the Virtual Internet Routing Lab (VIRL), is part of the 5.0 lab blueprint. VIRL runs on a hypervisor and supports the following Cisco virtual images:

OSv and IOSvL2

NX-OSv and NX-OS 9000v

IOS XRv and IOS XRv 9000

IOS XE (CSR1000v)
