It has been made abundantly clear that the problems associated with the ISDN are not all, or even principally, technical. It is true, however, that most of the problems do have a technical dimension. In this chapter it is intended to step back from the detail and look more generally at the implications of the ISDN. By taking the broader view the technical content may be diminished but certainly does not disappear. On a more optimistic note, some examples of the services that the ISDN makes possible will also be discussed.
