Progress (and its opposite) occur in areas other than the physical progress of technology. This account of progress will deal with three areas of movement, each of which has had, and continues to have, a profound effect on the development of the ISDN. The most obvious area in the first edition was the conduct of ISDN trials and this was treated first. In this second edition this treatment is curtailed and to it is added a short account of the present deployment of ISDN and the plans existing for the B-ISDN. Despite the lapse of time, not all of this account will be very encouraging.
