Abstract
Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) play a pivotal role in military operations as these are very much dynamic in nature and the concepts of Command, Control, Communication and Coordination in military operations are largely dependent on the availability of accurate information in order to arrive at quick decisions for operational orders. In the present digital era, both Remote Sensing and GIS is an excellent tool for Military commanders in the operations because of the easy availability of the high resolution satellite images. The use of RS-GIS and its applications in defense purposes has revolutionized the way in which these forces operate and function. Military forces use GIS in a variety of applications including cartography, intelligence, battlefield management, terrain analysis, military installation management and monitoring of possible terrorist activity. In this paper an attempt has been made to scrutinize the role of Remote Sensing and GIS for defense purposes especially in case of land based operation. Side by side effort has been made to find out the problems of using these techniques and how it can be minimized. This study represents useful information about the role of RS and GIS in defense purposes. It may also help the planners and decision makers to understand the usefulness ...
