Abstract

Biometric recognition is defined as an automated recognition for individuals based on their own biological characteristics such as fingerprint, iris, face, veins, etc. or behavioral characteristics such as voice, signature, walking. In the past, some biometric traits like fingerprint, palm print, and DNA techniques have been used as evidence tools for identifying the criminal [1]. Nowadays, one can use a biometric technology-based crime prediction, through detecting some collectable biometric traits of offender (such as a gait, eyes, face, etc.), and/or detect crime tools which may be carried by criminal (such as gun, knife, etc.) to obtain the required data, like CCTV videos, iris sensors, etc. This chapter aims at investigating the ability to use biometric systems to prevent crimes before happening.

This chapter is organized in five sections are as follows: First section introduces biometric traits in an overview; second section explores surveillance systems; third section discusses the legality of surveillance and its relationship to privacy and rights; theoretically, the fourth section provides an insight into the possibility of integrating surveillance systems ...
