Even with the best-laid plans, you cannot anticipate perfectly how every single minute of a class session will play out. Sometimes things will run long, other times short. The question is what to do when you have a few spare minutes and do not have time to launch into new material. Planning ahead by creating a short activity that may last between one and five minutes can help you fill potential gaps with a meaningful learning activity. Such an activity is called an Extension because you can use it to add on to your planned material to extend the teaching and learning time.
