Most professors who lecture do more than just talk in order to communicate. Rather, they draw from a range of nonverbal communication devices through physical movement and changes. These Pedagogical Moves can involve shifts in facial expressions, hand gestures, or body positioning. Pedagogical Moves can serve several functions:
- They can stress a message the lecturer has made verbally; for example, a single backhand applause, a fist pound on the lectern or table, or a simple physical move to the front of a lectern can provide emphasis to a point.
- They can contradict a message the speaker has said, perhaps with irony. If a professor uses sarcasm as a device, for example, he or she can eye roll to signify ...
