Description and Purpose

In this variation of the analytic teams technique (Barkley, 2010, SET 13; Barkley & Major, 2014, CoLT 17), students assume predetermined roles while listening to a lecture. Roles prescribe corresponding tasks, such as a proponent whose job is to find points of agreement or a critic whose job is to find points of disagreement. Students then pool knowledge they gained while carrying out their different listening roles and responsibilities.
