This chapter looks at a range of traditional linear texts and considers various successful attempts to break away from narrative conventions. It explores the storytelling works of photographers, film-makers, playwrights; classical narrative structures, the differences between linear and non-linear narratives and the film-editing theories and techniques most relevant to interactive storytelling. A thorough knowledge of traditional story composition, story devices and narrative techniques allows for much greater experimentation with new delivery platforms.
