Chapter 12

Communication Mechanisms for Smart Objects

Smart objects communicate with each other, but the choice of communication technology varies between different applications and different environments. In this chapter we look at the various ways in which communication between smart objects works. The communication principles behind smart object communication and how it differs from communication between traditional computers are also discussed. We then turn to three communication standards for smart objects: IEEE 802.15.4, IEEE 802.11 (WiFi), and Powerline communication (PLC).
