Chapter 17

RPL Routing in Smart Object Networks

17.1 Introduction

As already discussed in Chapter 14, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) formed a new Working Group called ROLL (Routing Over Low-power and Lossy networks; http://www.ietf.org/dyn/wg/charter/roll-charter.html) in 2008 with the objective of specifying routing solutions for Low-power and Lossy Networks (LLNs). The first objectives of the Working Group were to produce a set of routing requirements (discussed in Section 17.2), determine whether or not existing IETF routing protocols would satisfy the requirements spelled out in the routing requirement documents, and establish a routing security framework and define new routing metrics for routing in LLNs.
