Chapter 7

Power Outputs

Power loads need an MCU interface that supplies sufficient current to operate electromagnetic loads such as relays and motors. The bipolar transistor, FET, thyristor or triac may be used as current switch. Pulse width modulation allows the average load current to be controlled via the current switch, with pulse feedback from a switching sensor allowing closed loop digital control. An FET bridge can provide bidirectional drive to a conventional d.c. motor, stepper motor or brushless d.c. motor.
