Chapter 9

Input Sensors

Sensors are needed to monitor MCU control system outputs, using digital switched inputs and analogue sensors that include mechanical and optical switches and resistive, magnetic and capitative sensors, measuring external variables such as position, speed, temperature, pressure, strain, etc. Sensor characteristics, interfacing and calibration are explained, with examples of integrated sensors.

Keywords

Switched sensor; position sensing; analogue sensing; sensor characteristics; temperature sensing; pressure sensing

Summary

• Digital sensors include switches, opto-detectors and incremental encoders

• Analogue sensors produce a change in voltage, current or resistance

• Sensor characteristics include sensitivity, range, offset, ...
