Hayden grew up with a passion for architecture, and his first job was in property and construction. It was as a real estate developer and construction manager that he paid his way through college, ending up with a degree in political science from Stanford University.

Any entrepreneurial inkling as a youngster he attributes to his grand-father and uncle, rather than his parents. 'Neither of them were business-minded,' he recalls. 'My father was a lawyer and my mother was a social worker.' He continues:
