Web Sites, Applications, Virtual Directories, and Application Pools
As in the previous version of IIS, IIS 7.0 enables the server administrator to deploy application content to the server by creating Web sites, Web applications, application pools, and virtual directories. IIS 7.0 defines clearer relationships between these objects, relationships that more precisely express the objects’ purpose and run-time behavior. For example, in IIS 6.0, a Web site may contain a number of virtual directories, each of which may be labeled as an application when you set certain configuration properties.
