PROJECT 7: SMART STREET LIGHT BASED ON IoT
Introduction and Objectives
Street lights have been a blessing to our society. Many great men like APJ Abdul Kalam studied
under the street lights when there were no lights in their home. Street lights eectively illumi-
nate the streets in the nights and help the vehicles and pedestrians to travel safely under the
light. However, it gets really painful to see a street light glowing on a sunny day. Turning them
o based on timings is getting old. We need automated street lights which could be turned
on based on the environment and lighting conditions. This automatic street light system will
greatly reduce energy consumptions and maintenance costs.
Methods
Our Smart Street Light system will be mainly based on a combination of sensors. Together these
sensors will provide access for streetlight maintenance and full control. In the existing street
lamps, the lamps need to manually turn on/o which could require manpower. Plus, they are
not energy ecient because in some days the sky becomes illuminated by the Sun earlier than
other days. The traditional street lights have no monitoring system. In our project, we will intro-
duce the flexibility of Internet of Things to build a smart automated street light. We will be using
smart sensors to monitor the street lights and have full control over them. The wireless system
means all the street lights could be connected to the internet without relying on traditional wired
