IoT Frameworks
Chapter
2
As you have learnt in the previous chapter, IoT
(Internet of Things) is mainly a machine-to-
machine (M2M) interaction. In order to enable
this machine-to-machine interaction, there is a
need for an appropriate infrastructure which can
provide secure connectivity and data transfer
reliability. This infrastructure is known as IoT
framework and/or platform. IoT framework
comprises of large number of interconnected
and interdependent components that play
crucial role in building IoT applications. Some
of these components include sensors and sensor
systems, a gateway for connection points, an app
for a smartphone or mobile devices, embedded
controller, data management platform, analytical
platform, and so on. The most useful framework
is the one that provides end-to-end solution from
microcontrollers to device management and
analytics. This leads us to think of an IoT value
chain that helps in structure an IoT framework.
After completing this chapter, you will be able to:
Learn about what is IoT framework
Understand what is the need of IoT framework
Learn IoT value chain and components involved
Learn various IoT frameworks like RTI, Cisco, Salesforce, Azure IoT,
Eclipse IoT, Thing Worx, GE Predix, AWS IoT, Watson IoT, Kaa
Learn about IoT Ecosystem; and
Learn about elements of IoT implementation
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Quick Challenge
Describe a real world solution that you have experienced where machine-to-machine
(M2M) took place. How big was the solution and was it solving the problem it was intended
to solve?
