We would argue that the thinking behind pattern re cognition has been inordi-
nately constrained by the characteristics of prevailing computing machinery.
Otherwise, given the volume of literature on pattern r ecognition that has been
generated over the past 50 years, it would be fair to expect that some elemen-
tary forms of human vision or hearing would be demonstrable by now. It is
not feas ible to model processes that take pla ce in the human brain as s tored
programs on seq ue ntial processors. The technology in this regard tethers on
edges. Reading text reliably only works in tightly controlled environments.
