Chapter 6: Practical Experience

It’s time to put what you’ve learned so far into action. In this chapter, you’ll build a toy called the red wagon and a little wooden decorative box. The wagon project uses poly and NURBS modeling techniques to give you some practical experience with a larger project, and the decorative box exercise paves the way for extensive texturing, lighting, and rendering in Chapter 7, “Maya Shading and Texturing,” Chapter 10, “Maya Lighting,” and Chapter 11, “Maya Rendering.”Topics in this chapter include:

  • Using reference planes
  • Polygonal modeling in action
  • NURBS surfacing techniques
  • Booleans
  • Hierarchies
