The body of knowledge in this chapter allows you to control a key aspect of the look and language of a film and avoid errors that will make the footage unusable. The chapter starts by looking at how time is conveyed within a film and the powerful impact it has on the viewer. The use of linear and non-linear storytelling to affect the direction and flow of time is considered in terms of how the cinematographer creates a look or looks for the film. It shows how distinct looks may be created for different time zones if time moves forward and backwards or how one look may develop and change if time just flows forward in a film.
