Glossary

Following are definitions of the key words that appeared at the end of each chapter.

 

abrasive wear Wear occurring when a rough, hard surface slides on a softer surface. Grooves and wear particles form on the softer surface.

acceptor level Energy level near the valence band in a p-type semiconductor. (See Figure 13.37.)

activation energy Energy barrier that must be overcome by atoms in a given process or reaction.

addition polymerization See chain growth.

additive manufacturing A materials processing technology involving 3D printing to produce a layer-by-layer build up of a net shape product.

adhesive A thermosetting polymer that serves to join two solids by secondary forces similar to those between molecular chains in thermoplastics. ...
