11 Evaluation of the Entire Work and Health Initiative

The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate how program theory-driven evaluation science was used to evaluate the entire WHI. In review, the overall mission of the WHI was to improve the health of Californians by funding four programs designed to positively influence health through approaches related to employment. The specific goals of the WHI were:

1. To understand the rapidly changing nature of work and its effects on the health of Californians.
2. To increase access to high quality employment for all Californians.
3. To improve conditions of work for employed Californians.
4. To increase the availability of worksite health programs and benefits.
