4 Specialized Practices in Interpreting Settings

• Provide a brief introduction to specialized practices in interpreting settings.
• Provide suggestions for self-practice.
• Provide suggestions for self-guided practice in preparation for work in different settings.
• Elicit further discussion on the use of technology and wearables, challenges, and strategies.
• Elicit further discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of remote versus face-to-face interpreting.

4.1 Introduction

This chapter provides an introduction to specialized practices in interpreting studies. Topics include interpreting in a range of settings, ranging from conference, diplomatic, military, and conflict interpreting to interpreting in public service contexts which is referred to as public service interpreting (PSI) or community interpreting (Eser 2020). Under the latter category, the chapter includes a brief overview of interpreting in healthcare, legal, refugee, and immigration and customs settings.

The field of interpreting is changing very quickly, and the COVID-19 pandemic has encouraged the use of technologies and wearables. The pandemic has also meant that teaching has moved to online modalities in many countries. For this reason, the authors have added suggestions for self-practice and self-directed professional development by students.
