Introduction

Ethernet needs to be enhanced to be a viable solution for I/O consolidation. This section describes the required enhancements.

Lossless Ethernet

The term lossless Ethernet has been recently introduced to indicate an implementation of Ethernet bridges (i.e., switches) that do not lose frames under congestion.

Three questions come to mind immediately...plus one:

• Can Ethernet be lossless?

• Is a credit scheme required?

• Is lossless better?
