Chapter 21–It’s All About the Data

In this chapter on trust, we will examine the contentious issues revolving around personal data. Recently, data that was once considered worthless is now considered to have value and many companies are harvesting data wherever and whenever they get the chance. In this chapter we discuss why data has become to have value, why it is so important and how if it does have inherent value does the producer of the data – us – not get compensated when companies take it from us.

In this chapter the reader will learn:

  1. Why data has value
  2. Who are appropriating our data
  3. Google & Facebook a fair barter
  4. Data harvesting by stealth
  5. Data appropriation an erosion of trust
  6. If data has value should we not be compensated
