Surveillance within the context of the IoT has become something of a dirty word, which conjurers up chilling threats of devices spying on their owner, or being used as conduits for snooping and voyeurism by nefarious characters lurking in the shadows of the Internet. Recently, since 2013, surveillance has also come to popularly be associated with the mass collection, tracking and monitoring of communications, social contacts and the behavior of citizens by their own intelligence services, most notably the NSA and GCHQ.
