The Mechanics of Routing

Routing is a complex set of mathematical processes that is embodied in highly specialized routing protocols. Routing protocols have numerous functions, including the following:

  • Discovery of neighboring routers (those that are directly connected).

  • Discovery of destination networks that are accessible via neighboring routers. After discovering destination network addresses, the router has a couple other chores:

    - Comparing different paths (routes) to the same destination network. This is known as route calculation.

    - Building a table of known destination networks and the corresponding router interface for each destination. This table is called the routing table.
