PROTOCOL DATA UNITS (PDUs): FRAMES, PACKETS, AND SUCH

We have learned that most communications systems today are designed around the concept of layered protocols. We also learned that these protocols transmit and receive units of traffic called protocol data units (PDUs).

The term PDU, while useful and applicable to all layers, is often replaced by more common terms. The use of these terms vis-à-vis the layers are depicted in Figure A-10. The PDUs created and used at the application layer are known by various names. The term message is used for PDUs and is usually created by electronic mail (email) systems.
