AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS (AS)

Individual networks may be joined together by a router, which acts as a switch between the networks. The router operations are programmed to route the traffic to the proper network by examining a destination address in the packet and matching the address with entries in a routing table. Those entries indicate (one hopes) the best route to the next network or destination host.

Even though local authorities may administer these individual networks, it is common practice for a group of networks to be administered as a whole system.
