8.2. Fibre Channel Over IP

FCIP is a means of encapsulating Fibre Channel frames within TCP/IP specifically for linking Fibre Channel SANs over wide areas. Among the IP storage protocols under development in the IPS Work Group, FCIP therefore has the least IP content. Instead of a native IP connection between individual storage devices, FCIP provides IP connections between Fibre Channel SAN islands. As shown in Figure 8-1, IP addresses and TCP connections are used only at the FCIP tunneling devices at each end point of the IP network cloud.
