Chapter 9.H.323

H.323 is a commonly used protocol suite used to connect multiple CallManager Express (CME) sites. H.323 is also commonly used for multimedia conferencing. Other options are available, but the concept is the same, and it is good to learn how this type of protocol works as it relates to voice.

When a company needs to send voice traffic between two different sites, it has three main options—H.323, Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). All three of these protocols can be used when transmitting voice from a LAN through a circuit-switched network such as the phone company; however, MGCP is not an option when using CME.
