Playing with new and innovative musical apps from the App Store can help you create all manner of music, and you’ll no doubt spend hours doing just that. But iPhones and iPads can also record audio from the “real world,” as well. In this chapter, we look at the wide variety of microphones available to you and how you can make them work with your iOS device to record what you play, what you sample, and what you choose to radically mangle within a sound effects app.

Note quickly here that this chapter doesn’t really cover the internal mic for your iPhone or iPad. There’s a reason for that — it just isn’t that good, unfortunately. Sure, it handles your phone calls, voice messages, and inane questions to Siri, but you’ll need a little more horsepower to record quality audio for your purposes.
