Every good project starts with a plan. If you threw every ingredient in the kitchen into a single pot without following a recipe, you’d come out with . . . well, it wouldn’t have a name, but it would be something very foul. But if you take the time to decide what goal you wish to accomplish and the tools you’ll need to make that goal happen, you’ll accomplish that goal (and you probably won’tend up with something very foul).

This chapter guides you through the process of outlining exactly what purpose your collection of gear and apps (known as a rig to those who regularly talk about musical equipment) will serve and what you need to make that rig take shape. Don’t spend too much or buy equipment you’ll never use — make a plan and follow through!
