It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Chapter 9. The Built-In Apps
Your Home screen comes already loaded with the icons of about 25 programs. These are the essentials, the starting points; eventually, of course, you’ll fill that Home screen, and many overflow screens, with additional apps you install yourself. The starter apps include major gateways to the Internet (Safari), critical communications tools (Phone, Messages, Mail, Contacts), visual records of your life (Photos, Camera), Apple shopping centers (iTunes, the App Store), and a well-stocked entertainment center (Music, Videos).
Those essential apps get special treatment in the other chapters in this book. This chapter covers all the rest—the secondary programs, in alphabetical order: Calculator, Calendar, Clock, Compass, Find My Friends, Game Center, iBooks, Maps, Newsstand, Notes, Reminders, Stocks, Voice Memos, Weather, and YouTube.

The iPhone wouldn’t be much of a computer without a calculator, now would it? And here it is, your everyday memory calculator—with a secret twist.

On a new iPhone, the Calculator sits in a folder called Utilities on the first Home screen.
In its basic four-function mode, you can tap out equations (like 15.4 x 300 =) to see the answer at the top. (You can paste things you’ve copied into here, too; just hold your finger down until the Paste button appears.)
