Introduction to Biosafety
Chapter Objectives:
The aim of biosafety is to reduce or eliminate accidental exposure to infectious agents and to prevent release of infectious agents to the environment. Infectious agents include bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites and other cell cultures that can pose a risk to environment, animal and human health. This chapter deals with the various risk levels and its extent of pathogenicity. It explains how to manage risk and details emergency procedures. It introduces the backbone of biosafety in the form of Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, which is a precautionary approach towards biosafe environment.
