9.1 Introduction
To meet the increasing demand of video content, Internet Protocol (IP) facilitated the retrieval of video content from the web. The services provided by telecommunication companies (telcos) are treated as IPTV. IPTV provides access to digital television using IP. IPTV system includes a television, set-top box (STB) for accessing channels and video on demand (VoD) services, for example, Netflix along with an Internet connection. Figure 9.1 shows a simplified IPTV system.
An IPTV system with these key elements (Figure 9.1) provides numerous advantages over a standard cable delivery system. We discuss the advantages of IPTV systems as follows:
- Efficiency: First, all content is digital, which automatically improves the viewer's experience. Also, an IPTV system provides the ability to offer much more content via the switched broadcast capability. Using cable infrastructures, the service providers assign every channel on the wire simultaneously; the user chooses the channel and tunes into that channel. Based on this infrastructure, a standard cable delivery system is constrained by the available bandwidth.
