Chapter 10. Dual-Stack and Tunneling
The next two chapters deal with IPv4 and IPv6 coexistence and integration strategies. IPv4 isn’t going away anytime soon, but as discussed in Chapter 1, “Introduction to IPv6,” the migration to IPv6 needs to happen. For at least the foreseeable future, IPv4 and IPv6 will coexist. Unlike the Year 2000 (Y2K) “bug” that hardware and software developers had to deal with, there is no deadline or switchover date to go from IPv4 to IPv6. The transition is expected to take years. The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has created various protocols, tools, and mechanisms to help network administrators migrate their networks to IPv6.
